Smart Cities Accelerator +

The project SCA+, building on the former project Smart Cities Accelerator, will develop and test new methods for planning, coordinating and realization of new intelligent energy systems, that on the long run can reduce carbon emissions.

Copenhagen Solutions Lab was a part of the Interreg project Smart Cities Accelerator (SCA), where a handful of Nordic cities worked together with knowledge institutions and analyzed how legislation and user behavior features in the development of the energy systems of the future. The SCA project ran until February 2020 but has been continued in the form of the project SCA+. SCA+ is based on the experiences from the SCA project and will concentrate its attention on the insights from SCA that can be expected to have the greatest effect in the conversion to green energy.

The aim of SCA+ is to develop and test methods for planning, coordination and realization of new intelligent energy systems that for one thing will reduce energy consumption and for another will increase the share of renewable, green energy and in that way reduce carbon emissions. This requires insight and interplay in the whole value chain – from energy production, energy distribution, and energy storage as well as the potential of the buildings for energy storage and efficient, flexible energy consumption.

The project will among other things develop new methods and tools for holistic energy planning on city- and district-level, develop new methods and technology to deliver and make use of renewable energy in a more flexible and efficient way at district- and building-level, and develop and test new models for citizen engagement that secures a faster green transition. In the future it will be possible to copy and upscale models and methods developed in the SCA+ project on a national and European/international level.

In this way the SCA+ project contributes to the development of flexible, intelligent energy system targeted social housing that can accelerate the green transition in the energy sector. Furthermore, the project will contribute to securing an energy-efficient consumption that will make it cheaper to be a tenant while at the same time contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions on the long run.

The project is a regional collaboration between both cities, universities, and private companies. Besides the Municipality of Copenhagen, the project consortium consist of the following partners: The Municipality of Høje Taastrup (lead partner), the Municipality of Lyngby-Taarbæk, the Municipality of Hørsholm, Copenhagen Social Housing (KAB), DTU, University of Lund, the City of Malmö and E.ON Energilösningar AB.

The project is expected to end in the autumn of 2022.
