The Municipality of Copenhagen works with the indoor climate at shools

The Interreg projectcphsolutionslab.dk/null has made is possible for students and teachers to keep an eye on the indoor climate in their classroom via a new IT-tool.

This is made possible through the use of sensors in the classroom that measures the temperature, humidity, noise and carbon levels in the air. Afterwards the data is shared with the municipality and the school where it among other things can be used in the lessons. This is done though the website skoleklima.dk, where the current indoor climate and energy consumption is made visible. In that way students and teachers can be made aware of how it effects the energy consumption if you for example air the room while the radiators are on, or how it effects the learning ability if there is a high level of carbon in the air. In the end it can result in positive behavioral change.

The indoor climate in Copenhagen day-care centres and schools has political interest as the municipality of Copenhagen has a goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2025. Therefore, Copenhagen Solutions Lab collaborates closely, as project manager in SCA, with Copenhagen City Properties, Facility Management and Procurement as well as the Children and Youth Administration’s Energy team to solve the task.

Research from DTU has also shown that there is a connection between a good indoor climate and the learning ability, making it obvious to test the project at a school. The area of indoor climate is marked by subjective opinions as different people experience the indoor climate differently and it can be hard to express in words. Therefore this SCA-project is interesting because it is expected to contribute with relevant information:

  • Data and measurements that will make is possible to discuss a subjective subject from an objective perspective
  • Quantitative data that will make is possible to understand the scope of the problems with indoor climate as well as prioritize operational and facility efforts after the best results.
  • Qualitative descriptions of how improved indoor climate and light can help children’s learning difficulties as well as testing and assessment of an Energy policy, which has been proposed on municipal level.
